Reader question: I am currently an American living in Houston Texas with my wife and small kids.  We are growing more and more uneasy of the current conditions here in the US with economy and all and would like to get an opinion on what life is like in New Zealand.

Hey Dan, Have you ever visited New Zealand?  Since you did not mention it, I can only highly suggest you visit first before you make up your mind on emigrating or relocating your family.  Live in NZ is much slower than that of the US so that is something most Americans have a hard time with at first. Shops and restaurants tend to close early and generally the atmosphere is more of an older English farm community 50 years ago.  I can recommend the Wellington area, its the capital and is a great place to start looking for a place to live.  Queensland is gorgeous as well but can be pricey.  Here is a great promotional video on New Zealand…just to get you more interested.
