Migrant Workers Praised by New Zealand

A New Zealand government minister has praised migrant employees as good or very good workers. It is estimated that migrants contributed around NZ$8 million through taxes. Expenditure on the migrant population through education, health, benefits and allowances has been valued at around NZ$4 million.

The New Zealand born population of 3.1 million people had a lower net fiscal impact of around NZ$2 million.

New Zealand, Immigration Minister Jonathan Coleman has quoted a survey which was run in the country in which immigrants and employers were questioned on their work arrangements. The survey assessed the benefits and issues associated with employing migrants.

Over a third of employers reported the migrant workers had skills and experience that would not otherwise have been available to their businesses. Minister Coleman praised the migrant workers who had taken part in the survey, saying they had reinforced the value they provide to employers.

There is no doubt that immigration has helped New Zealand grown in the past decade. The last census in 2006 indicated that New Zealand’s migrant population was 927,000 people.
